Special Survivor Indemnity Allowance:

Section 644 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2008 created the Special Survivor Indemnity Allowance (SSIA). This allowance is payable to all Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuitants whose annuity has been offset for receipt of Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) from the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). Eight Ways to Get off The Couch

A few days back I published a popular pieces on Seniors and Retirees making a living on line. On the same site that hosted the inspiration for that article I found an excellent article about getting grandma and grandpa off the sofa. I think this bears further reading, whether you happen to be grandma or grandpa or you are children/grandchildren worried about the oldster’s future.

First of all, sitting around on the couch is bad for health and longevity, but in addition it can be financially and emotionally rewarding to stop being “old and useless” and to start taking action to empower your life and help others.

Here are some highlights I thought were very appropriate:

1. Raining Opportunity: Here in Southeast Asia where I live (I am an American who lives in the Philippines for family, fun and profit reasons) it’s very common to see people sheltering from the sun with conventional umbrellas. Many times I admit to going out without an umbrella when the sun is shining because I’m stubborn and lazy and a conventional “bumbershoot” is unwieldy and blocks my view. Here’s the details on a lady who lost her husband due to skin cancer … my condolences. Rather than adopt the usual, “oh I am a poor widow” stance and wait to see what the government might or might not do for her, she has built a company that designers and manufactures chic “anti-UV umbrellas”. What a “cool” idea, literally. Making a profit, helping others and helping herself as a side benefit.

2. It Takes a Village: Not everyone is hurting for money in their retirement. But many are hurting for something to give them a meaning in life and and keep them off the sofa. Here’s an amazing retired doctor who refuses to sit n the sofa and has instead built a health care network in 8 countries, with more on the way. Instead of whining about how much Medicare pays you, can you imagine how it feels to actually become Medicare to people who so desperately need it?

3. Cashing in on Camelids: Virtually anywhere in the world you can find stories about seniors and their pets. Even people in nursing homes who are profoundly affected by conditions like Alzheimer’s respond to the therapeutic affects of animals. So, why not plan your retirement from the git-go around animals that you care for. It certainly beats watching endless TV tripe and trivia. Along the way you just may stumble upon monetary as well as emotional profits as this couple with their alpacas have done.

4. Storytelling Success: Here’s a story that points up in the real world what I have long been telling you here … no matter what you retired from your knowledge is valuable and marketable. Here’s an Eighty-one-year-young fellow who formerly ran a retail store. Of course he could keep doing the same thing on line, but that maybe wouldn’t be retirement. So, he wrote the story of his retail success. People no pay to buy the story in book stores and publishers want more. Your knowledge 9yes yours dear reader) is valuable. Capitalize on it!

5. Internet Faith: Is your faith important to you? or some other belief that you hold dear? Here’s a lady who realized what she knew and what she wanted others to know … and she has built something that will endure even beyond her years … and can empower her retirement as well. The beauty of the Internet is, it puts you in touch with people all over the world and with a little guidance and direction, they build your content for you.

6. Real Estate Surfing 101: Do you have access to, or can you gain access to unique information? here’s a good example of building a profitable venture out of what is already there … scraps on the floor so to speak. Ever notice how when you search for information you get all sorts of irrelevant ‘hits’ aside from what you really wanted? Instead of searching for a niche’, build you own.

7. Pottery Passions: So what was your career? Superintendent of Schools? Honest enough and a needed position but frankly, a bit boring to me, and what can you do with that after retirement? teach others how to be a school superintendent? Ho hum. This fellow didn’t bother. He was always passionate about Native American art and now he sells it … along the way empowering his own retirement, making others aware of the culture and helping bring beauty to their lives. Boring? Hardly! Follow your heart.

8. Snapshots of Products: One of the beauties of making money online that I have found is, it really doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or what your physical condition is. Here’s a couple who were interested in travel and very active and then an accident took away one partner’s mobility. It happens you know, you can empower yourself now, or regret later. Because they took the time to get internet literate and learn to effectively use a digital camera they now make a living online and enjoy life rather than wishing, hoping and lobbying for yet another grudging handout.

The University of California at Los Angeles this week gave us the perfect antidote to Nick Carr’s musings in The Atlantic about how the Internet is turning us into multitasking scatterbrains with diminishing attention spans.

A group of scientists found that searching the Internet doesn’t make
computer-savvy, middle-aged and older adults stupid. It actually
triggers key centers in the brain that control decision making and
complex reasoning. In other words, we might not have to resort to word

As a 63 year old man I read this article with more than a little interest. I’ve often wondered if my continual surfing, on-line tinkering and just plain game playing was good for my brain or bad for my brain. Interesting results.

I’ve published a number of articles recently about seniors and retirees making money online, some of them much older than me, so I pretty much thought that being active and entrepreneurial online was good for you … but it’s nice to see an authoritative report.

My dear wife also runs several blogs. The other day she had a strange email. Upon opening it she found it was from a long-lost cousin in California, packed with news of that cousin’s life and updates on severla other cousins livng nearby who ha dbeen out of touch.

How did my wife get “found”? You’d probably guess one of the younger nieces or nephews searched and found my spouse online. Well, you’d be wrong.

The grandfather of them all, our 93 year old uncle read something in the newspaper about Google, typed his name into the search box one day just to see what happened and was surprised to see his name ‘in print” in a blog post my wife had published.

Apparently, if you are 93, or even younger, you too can benefit.

Here’s a really heartening (NOT) piece I just read:

Washington - Stock gyrations and a slumping economy are battering a generation’s hopes for a comfortable retirement.

The current financial crisis has destroyed more than $2 trillion of the wealth held in retirement plans, according to Congressional Budget Office estimates. Even before that loss, Americans weren’t saving enough to maintain expected standards of living in their senior years.

Now the bad news from broker statements may be confronting workers and retirees with brutal choices. Pay the mortgage or keep up the 401(k) contributions? Buy groceries or leave untouched a nest egg that shrinks by the day?

"Many people are making quick-fix decisions that put their financial future at risk," (my emphasis) says Jean Setzfand, director of financial security at AARP, in a recent analysis of the state of US retirement security.

The good news for retirees is that the bedrock of the US retirement system, Social Security benefits, remains untouched by the crisis. On Oct. 16, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that beneficiaries will get a 5.8 percent cost-of-living increase in their checks next year. That’s the largest such rise in a quarter-century.

The average retiree will get an additional $63 per month, according to the SSA. (Wow! Don’t spend it all in one place!)

And this is not a big, really big area of concern? Folks, no matter which dunderhead who is currently running for president happens to win, Social Security is on the skids to disaster and both candidates have plans that will drive it further to the brink. If Social Security is a linchpin of your retirement plans, you better read on.

Although I am currently enjoying a generous Federal retirement plan … so generous it was discontinued for those who came on board in the past 20 years … they can never taste of it … I have come to believe that retirees like me, and the huge ground swell of slightly younger folks now starting to join the retirement ‘club’ needs to do something other than hang around waiting to see which polical (I accidentally misspelled this and when I ran the spell checker one of the suggestions for a replacement word was “polecat”. How appropriate ;-)) candidate will ignore us most.

It does not matter if you are 8 or 88-. If your eyes (or ears) are good enough to read these words, you can do something, starting right now, today, to empower your retirement.

I write about that very subject here frequently … and one of this blogs “sister sites, Talar Profit Systems, where I cover the mechanics of making an honest online living in more detail.

Today is the first day of the rest o\f your life. The plans (if you can even dignify them as that) of both McCain and Obama, quite frankly suck when it comes to ensuring your retirement. So will you lay down in the gutter and die, will you turn away from this question to the TV to watch another Sex in the City re-run or will you act like an American and actually take action, right now, today, to empower yourself?

Recently I had the pleasure of some emails and phone calls with a lady named Sara Wilson, a free-lance writer earning online. Hmm, that’s not very unique in the way of news, now is it?

Well let me focus the narrative a little more on our theme, here, being a resource for Seniors and Retirees making Money On Line. You see, Sara contacted me as part of her research for an article she was writing on assignment to find just what the subject line is here, People over 60 earning On Line. I’m sure she put a lot of work into the article, I recommend you read it , but it does turn out she didn’t have too much problem finding multiple success stories. If you are coming up on retirement soon, or you’ve already retired and think that the rest of your life will be spent in wishing and hoping that whomever is president will toss you the bone of 2% COLA increases, then take heart. It’s not just this 60 plus ‘voice in the wilderness’ writing here with the message, there are plenty other seniors who are empowered in their retirement for as long as they want to be active.

For those who don’t chose to read the full article, I’ll summarize it here, it even opened my eyes to a few things. Sara’s client, the folks who commissioned the article have a pretty interesting and useful web site that is worth a visit as well.

I loved this example because it showed exactly what I have often preached. No matter what you original skills, play to your strengths … and it’s easy to convince seniors they will learn better from another senior … $30K plus for this lady proves my theory.
62 and 65 yo Men Selling an Online Service: It’s easy to find a dozen different ways to earn commissions or otherwise profit from the products of other people, but most Internet gurus will tell you, the most successful path is to create and sell you own product. “I can’t do that” you are saying as you read this. Well, no doubt these guys thought that too until they decided to solve a problem that plagued millions of people. These guys are now making over six figures per year and it’s cute, the “take away’ I got was their original internet was to sell ‘conventionally” I.e., “brick and mortar” storefront and all the normal trimmings (and overhead). They started online because it was cheap and quick and now find there was never any need to think about real-world real estate, investment and hassles.

OK, there you go. read the article for some more details, visit these folks online to see what they are doing, but most importantly, your take away is: Do not tell me you can’t make money online.

Good Tips Are Timeless

I saw this post recently on a blog I read and recommend, Retire @ 21 by Michael Dunlop. Seemed like something familiar to me, so I did a search here (you do know, if you are having trouble navigating, you can just type a word or two you are want to find into that “Search” box in the top right corner, don’t you?

Here’s what came back: What Can You Learn About Making Money From Your Granddaughter?. Seems like I wrote this up more than a year ago, least September to be exact. You see, you don’t have to be young to stay up to date

But I didn’t point this out to try to embarrass anyone or to make Michael look bad … these are both original articles and I was tipped off about Ashley by a post on yet another blog … I picked it up because of the learn from your grandchildren angle, Michael is focused more on the “Youthful Entrepreneur” aspect, but it doesn’t matter … the end message is really the same.

While I am sure that Ashley is as intelligent as she is attractive, I see no evidence she is another Einstein, nor do I see any really special education or secret edge she has, except one.

I am positive she did not listen to all the smarter, better educated, and especially “more experienced” folks who have told her “you can’t make money online”.

You can, she did, and let me tell you why there has never been a better time:

Years ago I recall a book which was titled something like “How to Profit From the Coming Hard Times”. Can’t find a listing for it right now, so I may be off slightly on the wording. However, in looking for it I found that Amazon has a bunch of similar titles, any along the same vein. No matter where this investment/stock market situation winds up, no matter how battered you feel over your current 401K status, whatever the rumors or realities of layoffs at your work are, there are ways to profit in, and even from the days ahead.

You can empower your retirement, you can stand upright rather than go around with the bowed head of a supplicant, and you can make money online.

Focus on stories like Ashley. Money can be made from the most unusual niches. If you are a senior or retiree looking to earn money online, this is your time! In fact, if there is no other good idea floating around in you head right now, write and self-publish a book on strategies to cope .. you certainly have the experience for it, and there has never been a better time.

To Make Money With AdSense, You Must Know AdWords

Many of us small-time amateurs get into the blogging for profit game because of the big frog in the advertising puddle, Google AdSense. AdSense is a very interesting and valuable tool in any blogger’s arsenal. It costs nothing to join, has no monthly maintenance or carrying charges and can work for virtually any blog or conventional website.

Of course it is also the tool many beginning bloggers love to hate, because AdSense will not produce much in the way of income unless you learn how to use it wisely. There are probably a thousand times more bloggers earning pennies per day from AdSense than there are earning even a few dollars a day … but that does not have to be the case.

It is not the tool, however that is at fault. In spite of articles you read every few weeks about the demise of AdSense it is still a very viable tool and profitable to both Google and to many bloggers, including me.

So how do you move from pennies per day to dollars per day? One key is, you have to understand how AdWords work. The only reason AdSense exists is to provide display area and “eyeballs” for Google AdWords customers. Think of AdSense as the paper that newspaper ads are printed on … AdWords are the advertisements themselves that the newspaper sells in order to earn money to produce the newspaper.

So how do you learn AdWords? Well you could just open an AdWords account and start spending money for ads to teach yourself how it works … but I don’t recommend that course of action.

Instead, take advantage of valuable and often free resources from experts in the field. My friend Eric Giguere has been wring about and earning money from AdSense for years. Along the way he’s learned a lot about AdWords. Today Eric announced a freebie book detailing some of his knowledge. As with much of Eric’s work I am sure he could have packaged this as a “for sale” eBook, but he has chosen to give the book away. Take advantage. You can’t beat the price and the understanding you gain will be valuable even if you never buy an AdWords ad in your career. Recommended.
